Everyday Lacquerware that Fits the Current Era While Inheriting Tradition
Yamanaka lacquerware is made in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City. As there have been many woodturners since ancient times, it boasts the highest production volume of turned wood in Japan. Yamanaka lacquerware, which expresses a natural texture by utilizing the wood grain pattern, uses "Tate-kidori" (vertical wood taking), which takes the shape of the vessel in the direction the tree grows, resulting in robust lacquerware that is unlikely to warp due to drying, making it possible to elaborately finish thinly turned items and lidded vessels. "Gato Mikio Shoten" utilizes the techniques of Yamanaka lacquerware and adds modern essence to it. The restriction of concentric circles by lathe turning rather highlights its beauty, sublimating it into universal beauty and shapes stripped of unnecessary elements.
