Asahiyaki

[Teacup with Poured Celadon Glaze and Gold Trim, by the 16th Generation Hosai] A work of a new frontier for the 16th generation Hosai, created by intentionally applying celadon glaze, normally used for porcelain sencha (green tea) wares, to pottery clay. Usually a refreshing green, it also carries a deep and weighty impression as it is exposed to the flames in the climbing kiln, with the brushstrokes of gold trim adding a touch of glamour. ¥52,800.

The Everyday High Quality Brought by the Elegantly Shining Green of Moon-White Glaze

Asahiyaki established its kiln in Uji, Kyoto during the Keicho era. It is considered one of the "Enshu Shichiyo" (Seven Kilns of Enshu) established under the guidance of the tea master Kobori Enshu, and follows the flow of "Kirei Sabi" (refined simplicity) favored by Enshu. "Kirei Sabi" is an aesthetic sense that adds bright elegance to the beauty found in the "loneliness" of growing old, known as "sabi." The current 16th generation, Hosai Matsubayashi, has been creating works with a modern atmosphere using Moon-White Glaze (Geppakuyu) pouring, and since last year, has opened up new frontiers such as Celadon Glaze (Seijiyu) pouring. The vessels of Kirei Sabi enrich everyday life with everyday high quality and beauty.
